Orbis: Google maps for Ancient Rome

Stanford have developed a Google maps application for the Roman Empire in the year 200 AD, called Orbis. To get started, go to the Orbis home page and click on the map on the home page. You’ll get options like whether you want to travel by road, river, or open sea, whether this is military or civilian travel, and whether you’re taking the cheap option (foot, caravan and pack animal) right through to the fastest (most expensive) land option, horse relay. The difference in time is huge: from Rome to Constantinople horse relay cuts travel time from three weeks to just one week.
